Is the difference between a homily and a sermon...?

Having been to protestant churches(half my family is protestant of numerous denominations and non denominations) most sermons have nothing to do with scripture. It is just the minister rambling his own ideas, often nothing related to scripture, 90% of the time about money(or seed as they put it)
