Less expensive to buy flights in the new year?

We are taking a cruise in March, and I am blown away by the prices of flights from Denver to Miami...I flew to Ft. Lauderdale just a few months ago and it was half the cost. Why is it so expensive, and if I wait until the 1st of the year, will the price drop?
