Should we all laugh when black Latinos claim Taino ancestry?

Considering more than 3/4th of them were wiped out from diseases? This is very sad. Why do black Americans; African-Spaniards and African-Anglos want to be something besides what they predominately are, black? Does it make them seem interesting/exotic or something?
