Do plants still conduct photosynthesis after they've been cut or picked?

My sister and I each took a rose from a bouquet of flowers and put them in separate vases with the same water and used the same plant food, but hers flourished while mine wilted and died. That's why I'm wondering if plants still need light for photosynthesis after they've been taken out of the ground.
